With laws mandating age verification spreading globally, websites are increasingly relying on IP intelligence to enforce compliance. But what exactly are these systems looking at?
The Anatomy of an IP Check
When you visit a restricted site, it queries your IP against a database like MaxMind or IP2Location. It extracts:
- Geolocation: The physical location of the IP (Country, State, City).
- Connection Type: Whether the IP is Residential (assigned by a local ISP) or Datacenter (assigned by a hosting company).
- Proxy/VPN Status: If the IP matches a known list of VPN exits.
The Residential IP Problem
Because datacenter IPs are easily blocked, some users turn to "Residential Proxies." These route traffic through regular household devices. However, advanced systems now analyze the latency and TCP/IP fingerprint of the connection to detect these proxies.
